Protein Mass Spectrometry

 

We provide the following (intensively used) analytical service for the groups of the BZH and the members of the SFB 638:

  • Protein identification by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry using Peptide Mass Fingerprint and Post Source Decay data.

  • Protein identification from complex mixtures by HPLC-ESI mass spectrometry with equipment located at the ZMBH.

  • Identification of protein phosphorylation sites by HPLC-ESI mass spectrometry with equipment located at the ZMBH.

  • Determination of the molecular mass of various biological molecules (peptides, oligonucleotides, RNA) by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry.


Protein mass spectrometry at the BZH focuses on the identification of low amounts of protein. This is achieved by subtracting individual background from the data and by manual data annotation.


In the future we plan to extend phosphoprotein analysis and to establish quantitative protein analysis. The latter will allow us to measure changes in dynamic protein complexes by mass spectrometry.
