Graduate Program

BZH Graduate Students’ Program

• All students who are enrolled in HBIGS are administrated by HBIGS. They come to the BZH study office to formally register as a BZH-graduate student, but they do not hand in any documents nor will they obtain a document about their activities (blue sheet).

Students who are not enrolled in HBIGS are administrated by the BZH study office.

• They register at the BZH study office.

• Within the  first 8 weeks they choose in agreement with the supervising research group leader (primary supervisor, Erstgutachter) two additional scientists as advisors (thesis advisory committee = TAC). The second and third TAC members should cover relevant expertise to the student’s project and must have the status of a group leader. They can be members of the BZH or faculty members of Heidelberg university or external experts from academia or industry. Senior postdocs may be appointed as TAC members upon approval by the primary supervisor. One of the TAC members should be available as second supervisor of the doctoral thesis (Zweitgutachter).

• Within the first three months of the dissertation each doctoral student writes a project proposal on the planned subject of his/her doctoral thesis, 2 to 5 pages in length (double-spaced, font size 12). This paper is submitted to the thesis advisory committee (TAC). The dates of submission are confirmed by signature and recorded in the study office. A copy of the project proposal stays in the study office.

• At the end of the first year and then annually the student meets with the TAC members and discusses the progress of his/her project and future plans. At least two weeks before each TAC meeting the student has to submit a progress report (3-5 pages) to the TAC members. The discussion with the TAC may be combined with a research seminar. The TAC evaluates the performance and progress of the graduate student and makes recommendations about the future plans and the graduate student’s capabilities. The TAC’s comments and recommendations are documented in a written format and approved by signature of each TAC member. The student must submit the TAC report  together with the progress report and a minute of the TAC meeting (max. 1 page) immediately following the TAC meeting (within 5 business days) to the study office.

• They have to collect credit points analogous to the HBIGS students. Credit points are awarded upon notification by the study office. The study office keeps records of the students’ activities.

BZH Doctoral Program – Credit Point system

• Students must collect a total of 15 credit points during their PhD studies (normally 3 years).

Credit points can be awarded for:

o BZH department seminar over 3 years with presentation (attendance list); 3,0 CP
o BZH lecture series over 3 years (attendance list); 1,5 CP
o BZH meeting with poster or oral presentation; 1,0 CP/year
o Guest Speakers lecture series over 3 years (list of lectures attended, min. 6 lectures/ year); 1,5 CP
o Journal Club series (within research group) over 3 years with presentation; list of 12 topics/year; 3,0 CP
o Method courses, offered by academic institutions, industrial partners, summer science schools, etc. 0,5 CP/day
o Soft Skills Training (project management, scientific writing, presentation and communication skills, etc.); 0,5 CP/day; max. 3,0 CP
o Teaching of undergraduate students, lab practical or course (per semester); 0,5 CP
o Scientific meeting, summer school with personal contribution (poster or oral); 1,0 CP
o Invited presentation; 1,0 CP
o Organisational tasks (BZH meeting, lectures, science forum) as a member of the PhD board; 1,0 CP
o Awards: poster prize, best oral presentation; 0,5 CP
o First authorship; 2,0 CP
o Co-authorship; 1,0 CP
o Patent; 2,0 CP
