The Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry programme at the BZH was established in 2012 through a joint initiative of the Faculty of Biosciences and the Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences. The programme aims to train outstanding students for careers in applied research within the life sciences.
Each year, 25 students are admitted from a pool of up to 1,000 applicants. Selection is based not only on academic performance (particularly in mathematics and the natural sciences) but also on additional qualifications such as extended laboratory practical experience and participation in scientific competitions. In the first round, 75 applicants are shortlisted and invited to a personal interview. These interviews are conducted jointly by one representative from each of the two faculties.
The first phase of the programme focuses on comprehensive training in the fundamental areas of chemistry, delivered by the Institutes of Inorganic, Organic, and Physical Chemistry. The core chemistry modules are taken jointly with students of biochemistry and chemistry. In the third semester, biochemistry students begin a sequence of specialised courses organised by the Biochemistry Centre.
The programme is typically completed in the sixth semester with a final examination and a ten-week Bachelor’s thesis.
In 2013, the consecutive Master of Science in Biochemistry programme was introduced, admitting 50 students. This interdisciplinary programme spans four semesters. In addition to the compulsory lecture course in Pathobiochemistry, students select three further lectures from a wide range of modules, allowing them to pursue their individual interests and specialise at an early stage if they wish. Furthermore, students complete four research practicals, with considerable freedom to choose host laboratories and tailor their academic focus.
The Master’s programme concludes with a six-month Master’s thesis and a final oral defence.
The modular structure of both the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes is also designed to promote student mobility.
