PhD students & postdocs

By coming to the BZH, new PhD students and postdocs do not just join an individual research group but a large and lively science community.

Heidelberg is a hub for the life sciences. The BZH is embedded in the Neuenheimer Feld campus, which consists of numerous university institutes, the university hospital and non-university institutes such as the German Cancer Research Center and the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research. Moreover, there are many facilities that are part of the CellNetworks Core Technology Platform, provide access to advanced techniques and are open to all researchers on campus. Everything is within walking distance, making it easy to meet people and collaborate across institutes. Outside of the campus, there are biotech companies at the Heidelberg Technology Park next door, the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies across the river and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory up on the hill.

At the BZH, we have many in-house activities to foster interaction and a sense of community. In our weekly institute seminar, presentations by BZH students and postdocs alternate with those by invited external speakers. The guest speaker lunch immediately after the seminars is an opportunity for students and postdocs to meet visiting scientists in person. Graduate speakers from every lab form the PhD Student Board, which organises the New Year’s Event for all BZH members and the Early Career Meeting for students and postdocs. There is the monthly Beer & Science event to hang out with colleagues on Friday evenings, and our annual summer party brings together everyone for a day of joint outdoor activities.

Finally, PhD students at the BZH are enrolled in the Heidelberg Biosciences International Graduate School, which offers structured support through thesis advisory committees and an extensive course programme. Hundreds of PhD students from all over the world are present or former members of HBIGS, providing a large professional network.
