Protein Crystallization Facility

The Crystallization Facility provides access to state-of-the-art structural biology infrastructure for users from Heidelberg University as well as external research institutes and industry. The Crystallization Facility, established in 2008 by Prof. I. Sinning and the Cluster of Excellence CellNetworks, is hosted and managed at the BZH and a member of the CellNetworks Core Technology Platform (CCTP) umbrella organization.

The facility offers the crystallization of biological macromolecules like proteins, RNA, DNA or complexes thereof as a full service (“sample in, crystals out”). It is equipped with two specialized ArtRobbins pipetting robots which allow the setup of several hundred crystallization trials with as little as 100 nL of concentrated sample per experiment. All crystallization screens and subsequent hit refinements are made in-house from carefully controlled stock solutions. Crystallization experiments are automatically imaged with the Formulatrix RI182 system. Images are stored in the RockMaker crystallization LIMS together with experiment details and project metadata. RockMakerWeb enables inspection of the individual crystallization experiments directly from the user’s desktop or mobile devices.

Dr. Jürgen Kopp and Britta Klem are operating the facility. More detailed information about the Crystallization Facility is available here.
