The LOTUS is a class of protein domains, which is highly conserved from bacteria to humans. Metazoan LOTUS domain proteins function in silencing of transposon mRNAs in the germline by the piRNA pathway as well as in translation control of mRNAs that are essential for early embryonic development. Loss of function results in infertility and/or embryonic patterning defects of the organism.

In the lab, we aim to unravel the molecular mechanisms of how LOTUS domain proteins function during germ cell specification and early embryonic development. To accomplish this goal, a multidisciplinary approach combining RNA/protein biochemistry, X-ray crystallography, and Drosophila genetics will be employed.
